Hampshire Youth Options is working in conjunction with the Wheatsheaf Trust and Motiv8 to provide new opportunities for young people between the ages 14-19, living in the Millbrook and Weston areas.
The two inclusion projects will offer young people, at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), support and the ability to gain new knowledge and skills to improve their quality of life and increase their future employment prospects.
The projects work alongside the young person to identify their needs and areas for improvement, from numeracy and literacy, information and advice about safe lifestyle choices, home & family issues, money management, positive aspirations and work based learning, (AQA or ASDAN).
This learning is supported by a programme of positive activities designed to encourage teamwork skills, self-esteem and confidence within the young people. The type of activities will include opportunities to gain nationally recognised qualifications such as first aid or RYA level 1, roadrunners (knowledge about safe and legal car ownership), outdoor activities, sports and art.
The project also takes a holistic approach, with a family support worker able to offer support to other family members. The can provide advice and guidance about their current situation and offer similar opportunities, such as signposting, learning and possible qualifications, like that of the referred young person.
Each project will work with up to 50 young people, all of whom have been referred by agencies, such as schools, police, YOT, social services, etc. Youth Options will engage the young people and work alongside them to develop the ability to move into a working environment, this may just involve signposting them on to an opportunity or it could be working with the young person over a significant period of time to develop the ability to work as part of a group or manage their own time effectively, etc.
At the point when it is seen that the young person is capable of moving on, Youth Options can refer the young person onto the Wheatsheaf Trust, who will be able to assist with work based learning or signposting them into employment opportunities, allowing the young person to positively move forward with their life.
